Quick overview

Types of fasting

Evidence about one type cannot be transferred to another. Every study and AI answer is labeled with the fasting type it concerns.

  1. 1. Time-restricted eating

Eating within a daily window, e.g. 8–10 hours.

  2. 2. Intermittent fasting

Recurring fasting periods, e.g. 5:2 or alternate days.

  3. 3. Whole-day fasting

    Roughly 24–48 hours without food.

  4. 4. Prolonged fasting

More than 48 hours, often with some energy intake.

  5. 5. Water-only fasting

Only water — no energy intake.
